Higher Education: Studying Minneapolis

Educated Creative Class Family Innovative Business Arts + Culture

Minneapolis is the perfect setting for college students looking to find themselves. And it’s a good thing, too. The nearly 85 percent of area residents holding a high school diploma or the equivalent need choices when they pursue further education.

Big Ten in MN
With one of the nation’s highest high school graduation rates, it only makes sense that Minnesota has one of the nation’s largest universities: the University of Minnesota. The student population on campus mirrors the diversity found throughout the city of Minneapolis and provides immeasurable benefits for everyone involved.

The U prides itself with providing amiable grounds on which to educate, and makes a continuous efforts to remain a leading instructional facility. President Robert Bruininks—who’s led the U since November 2002—expressed the university’s goal to become "one of the top three public research universities in the world" during his 2008 State of the U address.

While becoming a top research facility is a long-term goal, the U is not without current accolades. The list of student and faculty accomplishments at the U is almost endless. For example, professor emeritus Leonid Hurwicza was recently awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics. Student R. Justin Stewart was awarded Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture, the first U student to ever do so.

The university is also home to the Carlson School of Management and the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, both leaders in their fields. Their world-class faculties dabble in both professional and academic aspects, keeping their students informed about current business practices. The saying "those who can’t do, teach" simply does not apply to these experienced faculty members.

Seriously Artistic
On the other side of town, the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) offers a variety of art and design options for those who wish to fulfill their creative dreams. In the middle of one of the nation’s most creative cities, this school shines amidst neighbors like The Minneapolis Institute of Arts and The Children’s Theater Company. Needless to say, students do not lack inspiration on this private campus.

Independent Study
MCAD and the U are just two of Minneapolis’ many fine educational facilities. No matter the subject, no matter the student – there’s something here for everyone. It’s just a matter of figuring out what that something is.
