New York, NY (March 8, 2010) – Minneapolis, Minn. ranked 5th on Real Simple’s 21 Top Time-Saving Cities in America List. In honor of Real Simple’s 10th Anniversary, the editors conducted a report to uncover 21 Top Time-Saving Cities in America, the urban areas across the nation that offered convenient, timesaving services to residents. From the length of the average commute to the number of take-out meal options, Real Simple reviewed reams of data on dozens of American cities with a population of over 200,000, and ranked each city across five categories(1). Real Simple’s 21 Top Time-Saving Cities in America appears in the April issue, on newsstands March 15, 2010, and online at www.realsimple.com.

Minneapolis is a world-class city, with fabulous shopping, dining and entertainment along Nicollet Mall, the Warehouse District, Hennepin Theatre District and at Mall of America. In the City of Lakes, outdoor festivals are enjoyed year-round with a backdrop of spectacular natural surroundings and the Mississippi River winding through.

The rankings were based on the following criteria:

Getting Around – Average length of commute, walkability, amount of traffic congestion and airport punctuality rate.
Health and Safety – Average time spent waiting to see a doctor, number of doctors per capita and emergency medical service response time.
Information and Technology – Access to broadband and wireless services, number of bookstores and libraries per capita and 311 information services (i.e., non-emergency hotlines that provide government information).
Green Time-Savers – Access to recycling programs, number of farmers’ markets and community gardens per capita and amount of bicycle-friendly areas.
Lifestyle – Number of personal trainers and organizers per capita and takeout restaurants per capita.

Real Simple ranked each city from 1-5 on a scale based on various criteria. After rounding averaged scores in each category, each city was given a total timesaving score. Cities with incomplete data were excluded from the ranking. Real Simple also took timesaving quality of life details from actual residents into consideration when forming its 21 Top Time-Saving Cities in America list.
